A message from タンク

Got an email from タンク today. He is having issues responding to the congratulatory post so he sent me his response to post.

From タンク:

"30th grade - LOL...

Yeah - to the composers question, I also only got two - well - two that were deemed valid - hehe. One was Murail - the other was Andriessen and his personal brand of Euro-minimalism. Mu came up with Boulez and total serialism - even though this is kind of cheating, he is technically still alive. The Part would have been a good answer - too bad I didn't think of it under pressure.

The nota cambiata question threw me - it's been 7 years since I took 16th century ctpt for God's sake. But I got all the time sigs - in your face, Phucker.

There were many other surprises and delights during the test - questions like "Name 5 American guitar concertos written during the last 25 years" - for a guitarist this wasn't too bad - but if you're a trombone player I pity you. Also there was much pulling out of score excerpts and asking super detailed questions - also, you better know the sounding pitch of a major third natural harmonic on a string instrument. The fun seemed to go on forever, but I got through it. Thanks for the blog of congratulations!"

END

My response:
  • Andriessen and his brand of Euro-minimalism: Yes, now is the time on Sprockets when we dance (queue De Staat).
  • Contemporary guitar concertos: I hope you mentioned the ever important Concerto for Guitar
  • Nota cambiata: Even I am rough on that one - see jv3k's comment.
  • You failed to mention the special "LA Guns" style of composition that we were both in awe of during our years at IU. I can remember it fondly.
written in 2000 by yours truly! Actually, I can picture the eye rolling and quiet snickering amongst the IU profs if you actually did mention my piece. It is a humorous picture.

There's a thing called justice!
David Johnson is the hunch!"
