Everyone's a little bit racist
Last weekend, the Wifer and I went to see Avenue Q at the Orpheum. If you don't know anything about it, it is essentially an existential tale of finding one's purpose within a post-modern world told in a style which parodies Sesame Street with puppets and humans interacting (yes, that was a logn sentence). I knew a little about the show before we went since years ago I read about it in the BMI magazine (it started as part of the BMI musical theatre workshop). The Wifer and I were shocked and our guts hurt real good from all the laughter we experienced at the show. I can't recall when I've seen something so damn funny in recent memory. The songs were really good - well written parodies of stock broadway showtune archetypes filled with fantastic lyrics that sound like many of the inappropriate jokes that tank and I enjoyed in the past. I've been listening to the soundtrack while working and my favorite song of the moment is the title of this post: Everyone's a little bit racist. (the clip is really tame compared to the rest of the song)
Please - if you've got a chance to see this, go! It probably won't be cheap, but I can guarantee you that you won't be disappointed.
If I can finish with a non sequitur: What is up with the ability to rate comments on YouTube?! I understand the whole Web 2.0-world community-everyone has a voice thing (I Yelp, after all), but I just noticed there are thumbs up/thumbs down icons next to comments in YouTube. If there are ramifications for the comment reviews, then I understand (too many tumbs down and it is removed, for example). I will honestly say that I try not to get pissed when some jackass comments on the Tallis Fantasia or Dowland concerto in some ignorant way. My favorite comments are the backhanded compliments ("well played, considering...").
