PACES is a short piano piece that deals with a particular piano technique that entails the pianist?s hands rapidly traversing the different octave sections of the keyboard by using the thumb and pinky to play octave leaps while a pivot tone is played twice during the transition to another octave: first with the pinky and then with the thumb (or vice versa depending on which hand the figure is in and what direction it is going). In PACES, this technique is made a bit more challenging by the widening of the initial octave leap and by placing a different sized leap after the pivot tone. In this way, PACES is a sort of concert-study.
